Gradients
Engineering and fabrication liaison for four monumental cubes. This immersive artwork features shifting gradients and optical illusions, validated through precise full-scale mockups.
The artwork consists of four monumental cubes, each eleven meters wide, forming a grid. Their presence defines an immersive atmosphere.
Engineering demanded precision, balancing technical feasibility with artistic ambition and structural innovation.
Executed through RIBA stages 3, 4, and 5, the project advanced from concept refinement to fabrication. Every component was developed and coordinated for resilience, precision, and durability under extreme environmental conditions.
Current status: real-scale mockup completed, artwork fully fabricated.

Design and prototyping process
The engineering process required iterative modeling, prototyping, and mockup verification. Structural frames, joints, and reflective finishes were tested and refined. Approved prototypes validated performance and aesthetic criteria, ensuring full alignment between Random International’s artistic vision and technical feasibility, guaranteeing execution.

Mockup fabrication
A real-scale mockup was constructed, six meters per side, testing structural performance, material joints, and assembly techniques. The prototype confirmed alignment of engineering requirements with artistic intent, validating production.
Colour gradient effect
Each gradient combines two colours per panel face, producing eight tones across the four cubes. Varying panel widths and a carefully arranged layout generate the perception of an inner sphere. From the highway, drivers experience shifting gradients, an optical illusion suggesting movement within a static structure.
